Media Studies           Curriculum Video

KS4

GCSE Media Studies gives you the chance to develop a critical understanding of the role of the media in daily life. It encourages an understanding of how to use key media concepts to analyses media products and the opportunity for hands-on practical work.

 

Students are required to study media products from all of the following media forms:

 

  • Television

  • Film

  • Radio

  • Newspapers

  • Video games

  • Online, social and participatory media

  • Advertising and marketing

  • Magazines

Assessment Overview

​

Media One:

Section A will focus on Media Language and Media Representations. Questions in this section can test any two of the following forms:

• Magazines

• Advertising and marketing

• Newspapers

• Online, social and participatory media and video games.

 

Section B will focus on Media Industries and Media Audiences. Questions in this section can test any two of the following forms:

• Radio

• Music video

• Newspapers

• Online, social and participatory media and video games

• Film (industries only).

 

Written exam:

1 hour 30 minutes, 84 marks, 35% of GCSE

Media Two:

Section A will be based on a screening from an extract of one of the television Close Study Products and can test any area of the theoretical framework.

 

Section B will be based on either newspapers or online, social and participatory media and video games and can test any area of the framework.

Written exam:

1 hour 30 minutes, 84 marks, 35% of GCSE

Creating a Media Product:

 

You are assessed on your

• Application of knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework.

• Ability to create media products.  For example: Create three print advertisements for a new range of watches. The advertisements should emphasise a sense of tradition and history, and will be part of a campaign that will run in upmarket magazines.  The target audience will be 25-40 year olds.

 

60 marks, 30% of GCSE
