KS4 Art & Design (Fine Art)

This two year course is designed to offer students the opportunity to work in a range of materials both 2-D and 3-D, experiment with their own personal ideas and develop a range of creative processes. Students will develop skills learnt in Key stage 3 and will also investigate different themes and subjects from the work of other artists to aid in their creative process. Year 10 is an opportunity for students to develop their skills and learn new techniques.
Assessments are based on the recording, development, refinement and presentation of an idea. Student success at Art GCSE can be attributed to skills in handling materials and a disciplined approach to productivity, ensuring work is produced to the highest of standards and the deadlines met.
The course is made up of two components; a Portfolio (60%) and an externally set task (40%). Pupils will be expected to: develop artefacts and personal outcomes in relation to their chosen area of study. The Portfolio is made up of practical work, which explores the skills, knowledge and understanding in the learner’s chosen practical area of study. This specification is 100% non-exam assessment; all components are internally marked and externally moderated by visit.
A GCSE in Art & Design (Fine Art) can lead to further studies and potential employment in fields such as:

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The award provides students with a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person – mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and team working. Taking part builds confidence and develops self-esteem. It requires persistence, commitment and has a lasting impact on the attitudes and outlook of all young people who take part.

What award do we offer?
Here at Lode Heath School, we currently only offer the Bronze Award, this is made available to pupils in Year 9 and Year 10.
What does the Bronze Award involve?
Students will be required to complete the four sections (skill, volunteering, physical and expedition) in order to obtain the Bronze Award level. These must be covered for certain timescales.

Volunteering - GIVING UP YOUR OWN TIME TO HELP OTHERS. This can be anything from volunteering in a charity shop, helping to run a sport's club or working with the environment in a local park or nature reserve.

Physical - PLAYING a sport regularly. Any activity which improves your health or physical fitness counts so going to the gym, playing club football, swimming, or boccia all are perfect for this section.

Skill - DOING A HOBBY. Examples include: playing a musical instrument, performing magic, web design, but feel free to challenge yourself. Why not try rocket making or snail farming?

Expedition - 2 separate two-day trekking and camping excursions into the English countryside. Be prepared to push yourself physically and mentally and, of course, have a barrel of laughs!
Bronze Expedition
Lode Heath School provides the expedition section of the award. This involves your training and teaching of skills you will need such as map reading, route planning, camp cooking etc.
The Bronze level expeditions require you to complete a two day one night’s trip. At this level, the practice is held at locally and the assessment in the Cotswold’s. The environment that the expeditions take place in must be normal rural countryside.
The practice allows you the chance to get to know your group and iron out any issues, and the assessment is where an external assessor will be in attendance, and they check that you possess the skills required to complete the expedition.
