Dear Parents, Pupils and FriendsWelcome to the first summer newsletter of the year. I would like to inform you of some more good news Lode Heath has been awarded Healthy School status under the National Healthy Schools Programme (NHSP). Mr Tonks led the application under the new tougher standards, and I am pleased to report a very successful application. Well done everyone! Our girls have been leading the way in sports terms, with a successful netball tour of which there are more details later. Well done ladies, exceptional!!At this time of the year pressure starts to build with examinations. For both Year 11 and Year 10 these have already started. With our children subjected to more examinations than ever before, it is important they know we are here to help. Everyone gets stuck or does not understand something clearlyplease continue to encourage your children to start revision early and regularly and if they have a concern, ask immediately. Most advice says short concentrated periods of study followed by a short break are most effective. All the pupils in Year 10 and 11 have received advice regarding revision, please assist by ensuring they have a weekly plannerit is very effective in building confidence as the weeks go by. As parents, please encourage your child to attend the after school revision sessionsthey really do work!In general terms, all parents need to know that exams are supervised by invigilators and inspected by the Exam Board officers. Pupils must arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure correct seating, papers and instructions are given ready for the start time. Pupils are responsible for bringing their own equipment2 pens, pencils etc. Mobile phones, ipods or similar are BANNEDtaking these into the room may lead to disqualification. (This should not happen, because the pupils know this and should not bring them in).It just leaves me to say thank you - please keep up the good work with uniform. Do not believe your child if they say everyone wears skirts shorter than this or all the boys wear green trainers, it is not true! As usual at the start of summer, all pupils are reminded of the correct uniform and are expected to wear it properly and with pride, we are a very successful school, and we aim to keep it that way!Yours sincerelyJ BurtonHeadteacher

Lode Heath works in close partnership with Solihull Catering Services (SCS) to produce meals at lunch time that are amongst the best in the borough, we provide an efficient and consistent service. At Lode Heath we promote and encourage all pupils to make healthy choices for their lunch, encouraging a balanced diet.We provide seperate hot and cold food service areas which gives us the opportunity to serve a wider range of foods, including baguettes, sandwiches, wraps, jacket potatoes with various fillings and pasta dishes. . A choice of seasonal hot main meals is available every day. With the majority of food items on the menu prepared from fresh raw ingredients in the school kitchens, we know what goes in to our foods. Also available are continental style coffees and hot chocolate and a range of home made cakes and biscuits. Students can then sit down to enjoy their food in the new light and airy dining room. Breakfast club remains a firm favourite at Lode Heath. This is a quiet time of the day, where students can meet and enjoy a hot drink and breakfast with their friends before the start of the school day. The long term health and learning benefits of breakfast have been proved in numerous recent studies, and can help students to form good eating habits for life.We are very conscious about queuing time at Lode Heath School and the need for students to make the most of their lunchtime without the need to spend most of their time waiting to be served. It is with this in mind that the introduction of a Grab N Go service has been implemented, so that students can pre-order their lunch and pay for it at breakfast time, and then visit the pick up point at lunchtime to collect their order. The nutritional standards came into effect in secondary schools in September 2009; this will complement the governments standards for school food which we have been using successfully at Lode Heath School for some time. These standards encourage better eating habits amongst our youngsters that will stand them in good stead and help them to maintain good health as they grow up. Our menus are different everyday and include fish, meat and vegetarian options to ensure we cater for everyone. In addition to this we can produce foods for students who have special dietary or cultural needs, please talk to your catering manager about this , Mrs Ainsworth. Please feel free to talk to us at any time about the service we provide or concerns you may have regarding your childs diet, directly to the Unit Catering Manager Andrea 0121 705 2456,or to the Group Manager for Secondary Schools Richard Wainwright on0121 742 5166.
